With summer comes berry season! Blueberries are much lighter than apples so if you aren’t into lugging apples through an orchard, maybe give blueberries a try! The Mommy, UP! crew adventured out to Parlee Farms thanks to a mom who gave us the tip that they had an awesome new sandbox. Here’s all you need to know for planning your own adventure over to Parlee Farms in Tyngsboro, MA.
Parlee Farms has a really nice facility set up. There is a market to buy various baked goods including both frozen and ready to eat options. You can order ice cream and other treats from Mary’s Country Kitchen at the window. Oodles of picnic tables and real-sink handwashing stations are right between the market and the animal barns. Off to the side is a separate hut for getting set up with pick-your-own. The pièce de résistance? Real bathrooms.
Baked Goods from Mary’s Country Kitchen
Our crew chose a bag of their freshly made apple cider donuts and a chocolate milk. I appreciated that the label on the milk was Shaw Farm, a local dairy, rather than a giant corporation. Other families had amazing looking blueberry crisps and ice cream sandwiches.
Annie’s Animal Barns at Parlee Farms
The animal barns are lined up right next to the market and picnic area. There are chickens and sheep but the goats steal the show!
The goats have access to a pretty cool ramp structure that lets them climb up into the trees. There are lots of openings around the fence to feed them so even during busy times there is enough room to spread out.
Bring your quarters – and maybe a bowl! All the feed for the animals is distributed from these dispensers for 25 cents/kid-sized handful. For preschool & younger kiddos it would be useful to bring a bowl or something to make it easier for them to hold the stash independently with their tiny hands.
The Grain Conveyor Belt
The highlight of the whole day was the Grain Conveyor Belt and the guy/gal I shall name Introvert Goat. Kiddos put their grain onto the belt and turn the wheel to crank it up to the goats excitedly waiting above. Whoever made this is a genius, I would be totally happy going back to the farm and just playing with the conveyor belt. Our four year old could juuuuust reach well enough to put grain onto the belt so anyone small might need a boost. The wheel however was very low and comfortably used by littles & bigs.
Introvert Goat has hacked the petting zoo system with the help of their farmer friend who built this. The whole time we were there, the same goat was just camped out at the top. It was hilarious and I absolutely recommend heading here if you are having a grumpy day.
The Sandbox at Parlee Farms
Newly added during the 2023 season, The Sandbox at Parlee Farms covers almost 2,500 square feet. We visited on a crowded day and there was still space to play and trucks to be found. They have two of the playground diggers installed as well as a small playhouse.
Another space we could easily have camped out in, we left this day big fans of Parlee Farms.
Plumbing at Parlee Farms
Right between the animal barns and the picnic tables are these awesome handwashing stations. There were kid sized sinks, soap and hand dryers and I’m here for it.
A rare get, there are also real bathrooms and they don’t even involve dragging everyone up a hill and over yonder. You’ll pass these when its time to head back to the car for home! The ladies room had a changing table and kid-level/ADA sinks. The family bathroom was big enough to bring your whole stroller in and had a long counter that could serve as the changing table.
