Tucked up against the woods and downhill from the street, it is easy to miss this fun spot just driving by. Pepperell’s Big Backyard used to be an elementary school playground and it is now managed by the Fitzpatrick Collective. They generously invite the public to play. The space had an update in 2020 and they are still working on fundraising and improvements.
The aesthetic of the playground is dated but the silver lining is that it is also a unique experience; Especially for those older kiddos who might be starting to outgrow the playground but still have little siblings.
Toddler Structure
Off to the side with a little space from the main play area is the toddler-sized structure. Depending on your toddler they might need a boost for that first step because of variable mulch levels. The ladder is curved just right to make the transition to the platform more fluid for them. It has multiple slides and I really liked the wide blue one for those who like to slide down on their tummy.
The Main Structure
The large play structure has multiple bridges and platforms that are fun to traverse. Many a kiddo was running back and forth up top while our crew was exploring. There are many options for getting up or down. This is a great park for kids who love climbing or obstacle courses.
Forming a ring around the edge of the playground is this awesome obstacle course line up of equipment. It starts at the entrance to the playground area and goes all the way to the play structure in the middle. It presents an inherent challenge to all of the playground visitors to see if they can make it around the course without touching the ground. This is where I see an older kiddo getting engaged with the challenge while the younger ones in their crew just do their playground thing. Perfect place for putting those ninja challenge skills to creative use!
The Swings
The playground has bucket swings and typical swings.
Getting There
If you haven’t been before, you’ll want GPS to help you find this one! It is right off of the Pepperell rotary but there is no obvious signage and you can’t really see the playground until you turn in to the parking lot.
